SINGAPORE: Bondee CEO Fei Yu has addressed concerns over the company’s links to China, following the relaunch of the social networking app with augmented reality (AR) features.
In an exclusive interview with Channel NewsAsia, Ms. Yu clarified that Bondee’s parent company, Metadream, is based in Singapore and has no plans to provide services in China or to Chinese users.
“We do not provide service – not now and not in the future – in China or to Chinese users. That’s not in our plans,” she said.
Ms. Yu also emphasized that Bondee stores user data on servers located in Japan, Singapore, and the United States, and that the company is committed to building trust with its users.
The relaunch of Bondee with AR features is part of the company’s efforts to focus on user growth and user experience, with monetization less of a priority. The app allows users to create avatars and interact with each other in virtual environments, and the new AR features enable users to bring their avatars into the real world.
Ms. Yu believes that AR technology can bridge the gap between the virtual and real worlds, and that Bondee’s mission is to inspire real-world discovery and bring enjoyment through exploration.
The relaunch of Bondee comes after the app faced criticism over its links to China and rumors of the death of the social networking app. However, Ms. Yu is confident that the company can overcome these challenges and build a successful business.
“We believe that AR technology can bring people together and create new experiences that are not possible in the physical world,” she said.
